Dry Lining FAQs

What is dry lining?

Dry lining is the process of covering a wall with a secondary layer of plasterboard substitute - attached to the wall in place of a traditional hard plaster finish.

Dry-lined plasterboard is simpler to implement than traditional plaster and also produces less water waste.

You have a wide range of plasterboard types to choose from.

The biggest challenge we often face when working on a dry lining project is overcoming moisture, especially in bathroom areas. The best way to avoid this headache is to use a moisture-resistant plaster. These will usually be lined with wax, as the substance is incredibly effective at resisting water saturation.

What's the difference between dry lining and plastering?

It can be difficult to tell the difference between dry lining and plastering, perhaps because dry lining can itself be plastered.

Plaster is ‘wet’ and applied to walls or ceilings to provide a smooth finish. Commonly applied to existing walls or ceilings, plaster can be decorated with paint, tiles or other aesthetic finishes.

Dry lining is a dry process (as the name implies) as it uses plasterboard. Plasterboards can be used to cover both existing and newly constructed walls and ceilings.

A dry lining frame system can be used to form the structure of the wall or ceiling, which can be fitted with plaster boards to complete a wall or partition. This can then be finished by plastering and decorating.

Painting or wallpapering directly on the plasterboard is an option with additional finishing.

The benefits of dry lining

Quick and effective
Unlike plastering, screwing or tacking on, dry lining is a quick, clean, and simple process.

Dry lining is significantly quicker to complete than traditional plastering because you don't have to wait for plaster to set.

Neat and tidy
Due to the flexibility of dry lining, it’s a simple means of covering up pipes or wires which you don't want to be seen. This is particularly useful in roof spaces and basements areas, or in the refurbishment of offices, where exposed piping is often a common occurrence.

Room acoustics
During the dry lining process we use soundproof plasterboard, which allows you to make a room more sound-proof - containing sound within a space - making it the ideal solution for busy organisations.
